ALOHA! Welcome to the Luau!

HappeningsALOHA! Our class celebrated an event that everyone seemed to enjoy. There were many smiling faces as we had a wonderful time at our Luau. Our classroom was decorated with flowers, pineapples, birds and palm trees. The children laced leis with flowers and beads and learned about the Hawaiian traditions. Many children came dressed in grass skirts and flowered shirts and to complete their outfits, each child received a lei and sunglasses. We enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day outside where the children listened to some Hawaiian party music, did the limbo, played with hula hoops, jumped rope, and chased bubbles. Our snack was pineapple and tropical fruits. What a fun event!

The children learned about farm animals and what happens on a farm. They made farm scenes using various textures. They created apple barrels from brown paper bags, apples from felt, soil from oats, trees from foam and straws, clouds from cotton balls, the sun from glitter paint, and turkeys from feathers and markers. In science the children observed four different kinds of soil with magnifying glasses and predicted which one they thought would be the best for a farmer. We read the stories, Rooster Can’t Cock A Doodle Do, and The Cow That Went Oink. The children also enjoyed putting together lambs with tongue depressors, clothespins and cotton balls. For math the children did a farm count where they counted the various things on a farm and wrote the number and sorted farm animals.

In recognition of Earth Day, we have been talking about various ways we can protect our earth. The children are creating a booklet to help them remember the various ways to help the earth. In science the children are observing various things found in our earth – rocks, shells, plants, soil, twigs and seeds. We are talking about recycling and learning why we recycle. In math the children are counting trash items on various cards and clipping a clothespin to the matching number. The children are also using their fine motor abilities to create a necklace from recycled bottle caps. We went on a “helping the earth” walk where we looked around the grounds at St. Andrew’s to see what we could do to help. We are so excited to be spending these nice spring days enjoying the outside!
